Demolition Clearing Way For New Building on East Side of Square

Zimmermanís Excavating works on a demolition project on the north end of the east side of the Memphis city square. Three old buildings are being demolished to make way for a new facility.

The skyline of the Memphis city square took on a new look on Monday, as Zimmerman's Excavating began demolition of the three buildings on the north end of the east side of the business district.

The three structures, owned by Jon Fuller of rural Memphis, are being demolished to clear the way for construction of a new building. The 100 x 100 building will house Ignite Ministries, a tenant of two of the former structures.

The non-denominational ministry hosts weekly youth group meetings for junior high and high school aged children on Wednesday evenings. Recently the group expanded to offer a youth group for elementary age children as well as Sunday services open to the entire community.

Fuller indicated that construction could begin later this fall, pending completion of the architectural work and availability of materials for the steel portion of the two-story tall part of the new building.

Ignite Ministries director Les Richmond said the new facility will feature a number of classrooms for youth group meetings, as well as a gym and a stage for additional activities.

The one story building on the north end of the line of buildings was the first to go. Formerly the home of Paige's Place consignment shop and before that Kountry Konnections, the storefront was demolished on Monday, August 3rd.

Work continued on Tuesday, with the demolition of the middle building, whose last commercial occupant was Tri-Star Systems as late as 2005.

That structure, as well as its neighbor to the south, had recently housed Lighthouse of Faith Church until the group's new building was completed west of Memphis last year. Prior to that, the southern-most building had housed El Mezcal restaurant, which opened in 2008.

Clean-up work at the site is expected to continue this week before ground work commences for the new facility.
