Michael Cole Featured on Cover of St. Louis Lawyer Magazine
Former Scotland County resident Michael Cole, the senior manager of litigation support technology at the St. Louis law firm Thompson Coburn, LLC appeared on the cover of the December 2012 issue of St. Louis Lawyer magazine, published by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL).
Michael, a graduate of Scotland County R-I High School, is the son of John and Beverly Cole of Rutledge.
The cover story details the challenges bar associations face in their efforts to offer robust continuing legal education (CLE) programming. Cole is the three-term chair of BAMSL's CLE Committee, and discussed his approach to organizing up-to-date CLE offerings that truly benefit members.
"Our advantage as a local bar association is that we can often draw on our local experts from outside and within our membership," Cole said. "Local judges, for example, offer a wealth of information we often tap, and we have knowledgeable experts in almost every substantive practice area. Another advantage is that there are always local legal issues that we can address better than a larger or more distant entity."
Cole urged CLE presenters to engage their audiences during presentations and offer seminar materials in electronic form, such as PDFs, which attendees can access on their tablet, laptop or smartphone.
At Thompson Coburn, Cole maintains dual roles as an attorney in the Consumer Products group and as the firm's Senior Manager of Litigation Technology.
In the latter role, Michael oversees all services related to client technology and e-discovery. He develops and manages firm processes related to document collection, review, and production as well as trial support. He ensures that the firm provides clients with the most effective and efficient solutions to meet their individual needs and requirement.
As counsel in the Consumer Products group, Michael's practice primarily relates to defending tobacco manufacturers in complex litigation in state and federal courts across the country. Michael has extensive experience in all aspects of litigation including defensive and offensive discovery, trial preparation, trial support and appellate practice. He possesses extensive experience in the preservation, collection, review, production, and analysis of large volumes of documents; trade secret and privilege issues; and the use of computer resources to efficiently and effectively manage large volumes of information.
Michael is a member of The Sedona Conference Working Group on Electronic Document Retention and Production. He is active in the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis and serves as the Chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee. He also is a board member of several non-profit organizations in St. Louis.
Cole was the 2012 recipient of the BAMSL President's Award. He also received the group's Outstanding Service Award for 2007-2008.
