Putnam County Hands Tigers First Conference Loss

A huge fourth quarter wasn't enough for Scotland County to overcome a slow start on Tuesday in Unionville as Putnam County topped the Tigers 72-60.

The Tigers spun their tires coming out of the gates, managing just seven first quarter points by post duo Lucas Howard and Bailey Johnston.

High scoring forwards Trey Ream and Deion Hunt combined for 12 points but it was Riley Wood who was the difference maker. The Midgets center had nine points early as Putnam County rushed out to a 23-7 lead.

Chris Jackson and Jacob Blessing each hit three pointers as Scotland County's offense came to life in the second period. Howard added nine points in the period, but the Tigers did not have the answer on the defensive end for Putnam County. Corey Lewis caught fire for the Midgets, scoring eight points in the quarter, helping Putnam County add to the halftime lead of 45-25.

The margin grew to 30 points in the third quarter as Scotland County again came out of the locker room cold. The lone field goals were three-pointers by Blessing and Jackson. That allowed Putnam County to build the lead to 65-34.

Jacob Hull gave SCR-I a spark in the final eight minutes. He heated up from long range, knocking down three, three-pointers. Howard also picked up the pace in the paint, scoring 11 points down the stretch to make the finals core more respectable at 72-60.

Howard finished with 25 points to lead all scorers. Hull finished with nine points and Blessing had eight points for the Tigers, who fell to 4-3 and 2-1 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.
