It's only six games into the 2012 basketball season, but it's s a safe bet when it comes to the post season awards, Milan Coach Johnny Wood will have to be voting for Lucas Howard.
The junior put up a big game against the Wildcats in the Novinger tourney two weeks ago, scoring 23 points.
That was just an appetizer for Tuesday night's game in Memphis, where Howard ate up Milan to the tune of 40 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked six shots.
The Tigers' center did much of the heavy lifting early for Scotland County, which jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first period behind 12 points for Howard.
Both teams filled up the hoop in the second period, combining for 46 points in the next eight minutes.
Junior Lucas Howard has been head and shoulders above the competition early in the 2012 season.
Milan held Howard to just eight second quarter points. Brice Cowell picked up the slack, scoring eight points while Bailey Johnston and Will McRobert each added four points to put the Tigers ahead 40-26.
Raul Palacios put up 11 points in the third period for Milan but the Wildcats simply had no answer for Howard. He had 12 points in the period. Johnston added a pair of field goals and Scotland County pushed the lead to 59-42.
Howard closed out his career night with eight points in the fourth period as SCR-I rolled to the 72-53 win.
"Our kids played very unselfish," said Coach Lance Campbell. "They did a good job finding Howard when he was open and then he did the rest."
The Tigers improved to 4-2 with the victory and 2-0 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.
Howard led all scorers with 40 points. Johnston added 10 points and Cowell pitched in with nine points and five assists.
Palacios led Milan with 17 points.
