SCR-I Bounces Bulldogs 64-58 in Tourney Semifinals
Free throws proved to be the difference on Thursday night in Novinger in a semifinals battle between the #2 and #3 seeds in the 70th annual Novinger Tournament.
The second seeded Scotland County squad took advantage of a big disparity at the charity stripe to fend off La Plata 64-58.
SCR-I attempted 35 free throws in the contest, as La Plata was whistled for 25 fouls, watching two starters foul out and battling foul trouble all night.
While he would have rather seen his team shoot better from the free throw line, Coach Lance Campbell was very pleased with the fact the Tigers attempted 35 free throws on the night.
"We played very aggressive all night, Campbell said. "We really took it to them on offense, creating all of those scoring opportunities at the free throw line."
The Tigers made 18 of 35 free throws on the evening compared to 9 of 14 shooting from the stripe by La Plata.
That wasn't the case early on however. SCR-I went ahead 11-10 in the first period without the aid of a single free throw. Brice Cowell had a pair of field goals and Kyler Burkhiser connected on a three-pointer to build the slim margin.
Both offenses opened up in the second period. La Plata poured in 20 points but that wasn't enough to keep SCR-I from adding to its lead.
Cowell was a perfect 7 of 7 at the free throw line in the period and had 11 of the Tigers 22 points to extend the lead to 33-30 at the intermission.
The Tigers continued to add to the lead in the third period. Cordie Kigar canned a pair of three-pointers and Chris Jackson also connected from behind the arc as SCR-I outscored La Plata 17-13 in the third period to push the lead to 50-43.
Lucas Howard took over on offense in the final eight minutes of the game. The junior center had 10 points down the stretch to help the Tigers hold on for the 64-58 victory.
Howard finished with 20 points to lead all scorers. Cowell added 18 points for the Tigers (2-1).
