Veteran Indians Vanquish Youthful Tigers in Hoops Season Opener

Bailey Johnston goes up for two points in the first period of the Tigers season-opener on Tuesday night in Memphis.

The new look Scotland County Tigers faced a study in contrasts, right out of the gate. SCR-I opened the varsity basketball season on November 20th, hosting Clark County. While the Tigers featured an entirely new starting line-up from last year's opener at Kahoka, the Indians returned all five starters.

Those veterans helped Clark County jump out to a 17-5 lead in the first period as SCR-I tried to find its footing.

Austin Egley and Chase Bevans knocked down three-pointers for the visitors that helped build the big lead.

Scotland County's lone points were provided by Bailey Johnston, as the Tigers struggled offensively in the opening minutes.

Field goals continued to be hard to come by for SCR-I in period two. Jacob Blessing hit a three-pointer and added a bucket on the fast break. The only other points came on a pair of free throws by Brice Cowell.

That allowed Clark County to stretch the margin to 34-12 at the intermission behind an eight-point second quarter by Kyle Kovar.

Scotland County came out of the locker room looking like a different team. Cowell, Blessing and Cordie Kigar all hit three-pointers in the third period as the Tigers outscored Clark County 15-7 to trim the deficit to 41-27 with eight minutes left to play.

That was as close as the home squad would get. The two teams traded buckets down the stretch. Kigar had five points in the fourth period and Cowell added a pair of field goals but it wasn't enough as the Indians rolled on to the 60-41 win.

Blessing finished with 10 points to lead the Tigers (0-1). Johnston and Cowell added nine points and Kigar pitched in with eight points.

Kovar led all scorers with 18 points. Egley finished with 10 points to help Clark County open the season 1-0.
