Tigers Football Season Comes to Close in District Opener
South Shelby scored early and often as Scotland County's season came to a screeching halt in the opening round of the district tournament Friday night in Shelbina.
The #2 seeded Cardinals jumped on top in the game's opening minutes as Alex Blackford broke a 61-yard touchdown run to make the score 6-0.
Trace Windsor scored a pair of first quarter touchdowns for the home team, which built a 22-0 lead in the first quarter.
He punched the ball in from six yards out with 7:37 left in the first period. He added the two point conversion run, making it 14-0. The sophomore scored on an identical 6-yard TD run at the 4:59 mark of the first period. Alex Blackford ran in the two-point conversion.
The second quarter saw the Cardinals go to the air. Quarterback David Heatherman connected with Austin Durbin on a 21-yard TD pass with 10:33 remaining in the second quarter. The two-point conversion made it 30-0.
Heatherman then connected with Blackford on a 10-yard TD pass with 4:09 left in the first half. The PAT kick made it 37-0.
South Shelby tacked on one final score before the intermission when Andrew Teel scored on a 19-yard TD run with 2:05 on the clock. The PAT made it 44-0 at the break.
The Cardinals continued to rack up the offense in the third period.
Brett Threlkeld broke a 46-yard TD run to start the second half. The PAT kick pushed the lead to 51-0 with 11:07 left in the period.
Threlkeld was credited with a safety when South Shelby caught SCR-I in the end zone with 4:04 left in the third period to make it 53-0.
Scotland County broke on to the scoreboard with 8:00 left in the fourth quarter when William McRobert scored on a nine-yard TD run. That made the final score 53-6.
The Cardinals held McRobert to 63 yards on 22 carries. Chris Jackson had 52 yards on five attempts. Cordie Kigar was 0-7 passing as SCR-I managed just 122 yards of total offense.
South Shelby compiled 431 yards of total offense behind the big rushing games of Windsor and Blackford. The later ran for 152 yards on just six carries. Windsor racked up 100 yards on seven attempts. Heathman completed four of seven pass attempts for 86 yards.
Scotland County closes out the season with a 2-8 record.
The Cardinals (6-4) advance to the semifinals of the Class 1 District 5 Tournament to face Schuyler County (7-3). The Rams were a 14-7 winner over Louisiana.
Top seeded Westran (9-1) dispatched North Shelby 56-0 on Friday night. The Hornets will play #4 seeded Knox County (7-3) a 60-0 winner over Paris.
