Long Balls Not Enough to Extend SCR-I Softball Season

Brieanna Priebe (5) is congratulated by teammates after she crosses the plate following her home run that put the Lady Tigers ahead 1-0 in the district championship game.

A pair of home runs fueled the Scotland County faithful but it was ultimately a long ball by Knox County that helped the Lady Eagles capture their first district softball title since 1983 and avenge an early season loss to SCR-I, just one of two defeats on the year for Knox County (19-2).

SCR-I struck first on Saturday afternoon in Edina. Brienna Priebe lined a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.

But after a leadoff single in the fourth, Knox County took advantage of a pair of SCR-I errors to pull ahead 2-1.

Scotland County left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff double by Bethany Rader and a walk to Priebe.

SCR-I threatened again in the fifth with a two-out single by Randi Slaughter followed by another walk to Rader, as Knox County worked around the power hitter. But SCR-I again couldn't deliver the key hit.

That was not the case in the bottom of the sixth. Knox County's Devin Gudehus locked in a battle with Rader, fouling off a dozen or more pitches before finally driving a two-run homer over the right-center field fence to make it 4-1.

SCR-I didn't go quietly. With one out, Katie Howard singled. Megan Creek then crushed a two-run home run to bring her team screaming back.

That was as far as the rally would go. Gudehus squeezed a shallow pop fly for the final out of the 4-3 Knox County win.

Rader took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs, two earned, on two hits and a walk, while striking out seven.

Rachel Poston got the win for Knox County, going seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight.

Priebe and Rader both went 1-2, while Howard and Slaughter were 1-3 for the lady Tigers who closed out the year with a 16-6 mark.
