Lady Tigers Take Third at Knox County Tourney
Lady Tigers Get it Done Early vs. Marion County
It was an early morning start time Saturday, but the Lady Tigers wasted little time advancing to the semifinals of the Knox County Tournament, blasting Marion County 16-1 in the teams' opener.
Megan Creek led off the contest with a home run that opened the first inning flood gates. Scotland County sent 15 batters to the plate in the opening frame en route to an 11-0 lead. Creek added a triple in the inning to account for two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Bethany Rader also went 2-2 with a couple runs scored and RBIs in the big inning.
That was more than enough scoring for Creek, who limited the Lady Mustangs to just one unearned run over four innings. She surrendered two hits and walked one while striking out 11 of the 12 outs recorded.
SCR-I tacked on a run in the second when Olivia Harris reached on an error and scored on a base hit by Creek. Two more runs crossed the plate in the third courtesy of a double by Shaye Wright.
The Lady Tigers ended the game early, reaching the 15-run rule in the bottom of the fourth as Creek and Randi Slaughter had base hits. Rader drove home one run before Slaughter crossed the plate to end the contest on a ground out by Miranda Holland.
SCR-I Can't Solve South Shelby in Semifinals
South Shelby appears to have Scotland County's number. For the second time this season, the Lady Birds took advantage of too many SCR-I errors to jump out to an early lead.
The Lady Tigers' nemesis used three first-inning fielding miscues by SCR-I to plate five runs in the semifinals of the Knox County Tournament. That was all it took, as South Shelby rolled to the 5-1 win.
Bethany Rader took the loss, despite all five runs being unearned. She worked six innings, surrendering five hits and a walk while striking out six.
Scotland County had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but could not push across any runs.
The lone run came in the fifth. Katie Howard reached on an error and moved up on a passed ball. She scored on an RBI double by Rader.
Rader went 2-3 at the plate. Olivia Harris, Miranda Holland, Claire Shannan and Randi Slaughter had the other SCR-I hits.
SCR-I Captures 3rd Place With 6-3 Comeback Win Over Canton
An early 3-0 deficit put Scotland County on the clock, but the Lady Tigers were able to rally to knock off Canton 6-3 to claim third place in the Knox County Tournament on Saturday.
Three SCR-I errors opened the door for Canton to build a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off Megan Creek.
Bethany Rader trimmed the lead to 3-2 when she jacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame.
The junior delivered an RBI double in the second to plate Katie Howard, who reached on a base hit, to tie the score at 3-3.
Creek worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth to keep the game tied.
SCR-I broke through in the bottom of the inning. Howard singled but was erased on a fielder's choice by Creek. After a single by Randi Slaughter, Rader again delivered the key hit, a two-run double. She scored when Brieanna Preiebe reached on an error to make it 6-3.
That was the final score as the game was called midway through the fifth on the time limit.
Creek notched the victory, allowing three runs, all unearned, on five hits and a walk in five innings of work. She fanned six.
Rader went 3-3 with a homer, two doubles and five RBIs. Howard was 2-2 with a walk. SCR-I improved to 14-5 on the season with the victory.
