Late Rally Falls Short in 5-3 Season-Opening Loss for Lady Tigers

Olivia Harris blocks the plate and tags out the runner at home to end the first inning of Tuesday's home opener versus South Shelby.

The 2012 Scotland County softball season got off to a slow start Thursday in Kahoka. But the Lady Tigers turned things around late before ultimately coming up a bit short in a 5-3 loss to Clark County.

The Indian's Kailey Roberts kept SCR-I's bats at silent early on. After surrendering a leadoff single to Megan Creek to start the game, the junior retired the 15 batters in order.

Bethany Rader allowed a pair of base hits in the bottom of the second, but appeared poised to get out of the jam before an error allowed both runs to score.

That was the pattern for the day, as all five of Clark County's runs were unearned courtesy of five SCR-I errors.

The Lady Indians tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. A one-out walk was followed by an error that opened the door for the home team to extend the lead to 4-0.

Clark County made it 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of a walk and a pair of errors.

Shaye Wright broke Roberts's perfect streak with a one out single in the top of the sixth.

Scotland County made things interesting in the top of the seventh. With one out, Randi Slaughter singled. Rader and Miranda Holland followed with base hits to load the bases. Hailey Dial drove in two runs with a base hit. Claire Shannan made it five hits in a row, plating Holland before Dial was thrown out at the plate. Brieanna Priebe popped out to the shortstop to end the contest with a final score of 5-3.

Rader took the loss on the mound for SCR-I. She went six innings allowed five unearned runs on just four hits and two walks. She struck out four.

Roberts notched the win, going seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks and striking out five. The Lady Indians played error-free ball on the night, the difference in the game.
