Lady Tigers Close Out Successful Summer of Softball

While 99% of Scotland County was tickled to see the rain falling Wednesday night last week, the Scotland County softball players may have been the lone residents lamenting the precipitation. Just enough rain fell over night to shorten the Lady Tigers team camp from three days, to just two days, as Thursday was lost to wet field conditions.

The team camp marked the conclusion of a productive summer for the SCR-I softball program. Coach Kim Small has 19 players scheduled to represent Scotland County High School this fall.

A handful of players participated in traveling teams in Missouri and Iowa over the summer, in addition to taking the field for Small's traveling team that played in the Kirksville Katz league. The team finished league play with a 7-3 record. In addition, the Lady Tigers also played scrimmage contests versus Schuyler County and Clark County, picking up victories in both contests.

"We had lots of games where we were missing key players who were traveling with other teams," Small said. "That meant we had to mix and match our lineups, throwing some of the young players into the fire. I'm very happy with how they responded. It's only going to make them better."

Small said pitchers Megan Creek and Bethany Rader played on travel teams as did Brieanna Priebe, Olivia Harris and Miranda Holland.

"I know Bethany's team was playing in the National USSSA tournament this past week, so she wasn't able to be at camp," Small said.

The coach is looking forward to getting her full squad together for the start of high school practices on August 6th.

Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) rules governing the sport have changed for 2012. Schools are now required to complete 14 practices prior to competing in the first game. Previously, the practice rule had been just 10. That means the start of the high school season will be pushed back. SCR-I will open play August 23rd in Kahoka versus Clark County.
