Smith, Duzan Key Missouri Victory in Softball Salute Split Versus Illinois All Stars

Loren Smith smacks a base hit to right field that plates fellow SCR-I alum Elizabeth Duzan with what proved to be the winning run in Sunday's Missouri versus Illinois all-star softball game in Quincy, IL.

It was a perfect ending for former Scotland County teammates Elizabeth Duzan and Loren Smith. The duo capped off a 2-1 victory for the Missouri all-stars in the Senior Salute softball double header versus Illinois on Sunday in Quincy, IL.

Duzan crossed the plate with the winning run on an RBI base hit by Smith. Duzan scored both of the Missouri team's tallies in the 2-0 win. She was used as courtesy runner for Missouri pitcher Kindra Henze of Palmyra. Henze walked in the second inning and gave way to Duzan, who promptly stole second base and then came in to score on a base hit by Lexie Wilt of South Shelby. In the fourth inning, Henze tripled. Duzan again entered the game as the courtesy runner, and scored what proved to be the winning run when Smith delivered a base hit.

Smith was tasked with handling the catching duties for Henze, who struck out nine and walked none en route to the 2-1 win.

"The competition level rises, so you go into the game a little nervous, but everyone was there to have fun, so that helped relax us," Duzan said. "The players earned their way to Quincy and I think we all were just trying to do our best while enjoying the chance to play with some of the area's best."

The Missouri squad had a chance to meet Friday in Palmyra for practice, but the session was cut short by rain.

"We were all disappointed we didn't get to practice very long, but most of us were really wishing we could take some of that rain home with us," Duzan said regarding the drought that has gripped much of the region.

Missouri's celebration was spoiled by a seventh inning Illinois rally. The Show-Me State squad led by as much as 7-1, before Illinois capped off the comeback in the team's final at bat to post the 8-7 win.

Duzan started in centerfield in game two and went 1-3, with a walk and a run scored.

She'll be taking her game to Hannibal-LaGrange College in the fall. Smith's performance at the classic opened some scouts' eyes. She reportedly drew some interest from Duzan's new school, which is recruiting to fill a vacancy in its catching ranks.
