Duzan, Smith to Represent SCR-I at All-Star Softball Contest

Loren Smith, pictured here gunning down a runner at first base in action during the 2011 softball season, is one of two Lady Tigers representing SCR-I in the upcoming Missouri vs. Illinois Senior Salute all-star softball game in Quincy, IL.

The 2012 Illinois vs. Missouri Senior Softball Salute will be held Sunday, July 8 at Harry Phillips Field in Quincy, IL. The ninth annual event will be a doubleheader of two seven-inning games starting at 5 p.m.

Scotland County R-I graduates Elizabeth Duzan and Loren Smith will represent the Lady Tigers on the Missouri squad.

Two of the area's best pitchers will be on display. Cheyanne Bowman compiled a 31-7 record to go with 500 strikeouts this spring while leading Payson Seymour to second place in the Illinois Class 1A state tournament, the best finish in school history. Meanwhile, Kindra Henze wrapped up an all-state career in the pitching circle at Palmyra, going 25-2 with a 1.00 earned-run average, 258 strikeouts and five no-hitters as the Lady Panthers won their fourth Missouri Class 2 state championship in the past six years.

Bowman and Henze will be joined by other standout pitchers. Illinois will have Mackenzie Buyck and Brooke Wellman of Liberty, Mariah Hoke of Quincy High School, Torie Thomas of Central, Ashley Kerfoot of Illini West and Aubrey Wilson of Quincy Notre Dame. Missouri will counter with Julie Schultz of Highland, Melissa Wood of Mark Twain and Kathleen Minor of Monroe City.

Henze's coach, Joe Brandenburg will guide the Missouri all-stars. Brandenburg spent four years at the Lady Panthers' helm before stepping down after the 2011 season, reaching at least the quarterfinals each season. He also coached Palmyra to a state championship in 2008 and a berth in the state title game in 2010.

Steve Buyck of Liberty has been chosen as the Illinois coach. He has coached the Lady Eagles to at least the Class 1A regional championship in each of his four seasons and his 2009 team advanced to the super-sectional.

SCR-I graduate Elizabeth Duzan will be taking her game to Hannibal LaGrange College in the fall after she represents her alma mater one last time in the Missouri vs. Illinois all-star game.

The series began in 2004 and Missouri leads 9-7. Last year's doubleheader was a split with Illinois winning the opener 4-3 and Missouri taking the nightcap 4-2. Five of the eight doubleheaders have been splits. Sweeps have been recorded by Missouri in 2006 and 2010 and Illinois in 2009.

Sponsors for this year's event are Refreshment Services Pepsi of Quincy, Picture This Photography and the Quincy CYO. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. Harry Phillips Field, formerly known as Maranatha Field, is located at 12th Street and Einhaus Road, a half-mile south of the intersection of 12th Street and Highway 24.
