Smith-Roberts, Miller, Howard Advance to Sectional Track Competition

While the 2012 track season came to a close for the bulk of the Scotland County program, three local athletes advanced one step closer to the state championships with qualifying victories at the Class 2 District 4 track meet held Saturday, May 5th at Centralia.
Loren Smith-Roberts was the lone Lady Tiger to move on to the sectional meet. The senior will be vying for a berth in the state championships in a pair of events. Smith-Roberts finished third in the discus with a throw of 118'03". Centralia's Kelsey Benoit was the district champion with a throw of 130'01". Haley Heuer of Harrisburg was the runner-up, at a distance of 122'08". Also moving on to sectionals was fourth place finisher Cassidy Johnston of South Shelby with a throw of 114'.
Smith-Roberts also advanced in the shot put, with a fourth place finish. Her throw of 37'7.5" was a foot and half further than the fifth place finisher. Benoit made it a sweep of the district titles in the throwing events, winning the shot put with a toss of 41'6". Lexie Wilt, a senior from South Shelby, was second at a distance of 41'2" followed by Heuer in third at 39'1".
Zach Miller sprinted his way to at least two more races in the 2012 season. The junior set the bar in the 100-meter dash preliminaries with the fastest time of the day, a 11.67 run in the qualifiers.
But Miller had to settle for second place in the finals, as Macon's Taquan Kelly crossed the finish line in 11.48 seconds. Miller improved his time to 11.69 seconds. Finishing third was Jonathon Huff, a senior from Brookfield (11.83 seconds), followed by Schuyler County senior Dakota Schmitter in fourth in a time of 11.86 seconds.
Miller also advanced to the sectional event with a top four finish in the 200-meter dash. After qualifying in fifth place, with a time of 23.50 seconds, Miller stepped it up in the finals, finishing third in a time of 23.99 seconds. Rhett Cook, a senior from Schuyler County, was first in a time of 23.67 seconds. Huff was second in 23.91 seconds. Mason Thompson, a junior from Milan, advanced to sectionals with a fourth place run in a time of 24.09 seconds, edging Kelly and Schmitter for the final spot to move on.
Miller also competed in the 400-meter dash, finishing ninth overall, with teammate Chris Jackson finishing 12th.
Lucas Howard will be the third SCR-I participant at sectionals as the team returns to Centralia High School on Saturday, May 12th.
The sophomore finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 43.39 seconds. Skylar Baird, a junior from South Shelby, was first in 41.4 seconds followed by Andrew Baum, a senior from Brookfield (41.75 seconds) and Brennen Floray, a junior from Marceline (43.22 seconds).
Howard looked poised to move on the 110-meter hurdles after a third-best time in qualifiers. But Howard ended up fifth in the finals, missing the ticket to advance by one spot. Floray won the race in 15.89 seconds.
Howard also competed in the triple jump, finishing in seventh place with a jump of 39'6.5" Baum won the event with a distance of 42'1.25".
The Scotland County boys finished 11th overall in team points with 30. Centralia won the team title with 94.5 points followed by Brookfield with 88 points.
Monte Sally finished ninth in the discus with teammate William Masden in 12th. Masden was 11th in the shot put and Sally was 18th.
The Tigers 4x800 meter relay team of Joseph Hite, Jackson, Rowan Johnson and Randan Kraus was sixth.
Justin Girardin finished 16th in the 800-meter run. Logan Payne was seventh in the 3,200-meter run.
The 4x400 meter team of Brock Bondurant, Jackson, Johnson and Miller was 11th.
The Lady Tigers finished 14th as a team with 11 points. Palmyra won the girls district title with 120 points followed by Centralia with 112 points.
Freshman Randi Slaughter finished 15th in the long jump, 12th in the triple jump, and 11th in the 200-meter dash. Brieanna Priebe was 17th in the race.
Paige McClamroch finished 18th in the 1,600-meter run. Alexis Dodge was 14th in the 100-meter dash.
Courtney Brassfield was 22nd in the shot put and 23rd in the discus.
The competing high schools included: Brookfield, Centralia, Clark County, Fayette, Hallsville, Harrisburg, Highland, Macon, Marceline, Milan, Monroe City, Palmyra, Putnam County, Salisbury, Schuyler County, South Shelby and SCR-I.
The top four finishers in each event advance to the sectional meet, which will also feature the top four qualifiers from District 3. The sectional meet will be held at Centralia on Saturday, May 12th, in conjunction with the Class 1 Sectional for District 1 and District 2.
