Shannan Powers Tigers to 12-5 Win Over Knox County
Ben Shannan eyes the long double leaving his bat en route to left-center field gap during Monday night's 12-5 win over Knox County. The senior cracked a pair of doubles and a home run in the win.
What looked like a 10-run rule candidate early on got a little interesting for Scotland County thanks to some defensive lapses that allowed Knox County to stay in striking distance on Monday night in Memphis before SCR-I finally pulled away for the 12-5 victory.
The Tigers brought their hitting sticks early. Cordie Kigar led off with a base on balls. He stole second and moved into scoring position on a hit by Zach Miller. A double steal netted SCR-I first run of the night. Drew Miller followed with a base hit before Ben Shannan ripped a double to the left field gap scoring both runners. He came in to score on an RBI single by Jacob Blessing. Brice Cowell made it 5-0 with an RBI single.
Scotland County made it 8-0 in the second inning. Z. Miller reached on a bunt single. He came in to score on a base hit by D. Miller. Andrew Mathes then delivered a run -scoring triple. Shannan belted his second double in as many innings to plate Mathes.
Kigar walked to start the third inning and ultimately scored on a base hit by Mathes to push the lead to 9-0.
Knox County was not experiencing any luck at the plate. Shannan had a perfect game through three innings. The Eagles finally broke it up with a bloop single to centerfield. Blessing appeared to make a great diving catch, but the umpires ruled that he trapped the ball, resulting in a single. A couple errors by the defense let two runs cross the plate for the visitors.
Jacob Hull reached on an error to start the bottom of the fourth. He score on a base hit by Tyler Buford to make the score 10-2.
Knox County trimmed the deficit to 10-5 in the top of the fifth without the benefit of ever hitting the ball out of the infield. A bunt single and two walks got Shannan into trouble, before Wayne Minear delivered an RBI single. The Tigers defense again compounded the issue with two more errors that helped Knox County tack on two more unearned runs.
Shannan gave himself a little breathing room in the bottom of the frame, capping off a huge night at the plate with a two-run homerun.
He pitched out of another jam in the sixth before retiring the side in order in the seventh to seal the 12-5 win.
The senior allowed just three hits, while walking two and hitting one batter. Shannan racked up 17 strikeouts in the complete game performance.
He was 3-4 with the bat, driving in five with two doubles and a homer. D. Miller was 3-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Z. Miller, Mathes, Blessing, Cowell and Buford all added two hits each, as the Tigers offense knocked the Knox County pitching around for 16 hits on the night.
SCR-I improved to 11-1 on the year and 3-0 in the Tri-Rivers Conference. Knox County fell to 2-9 and 1-3 in league play.
