Putnam Claims Conference Title With 47-40 Win Over SCR-I

Courtney Jackson.

Putnam County nailed down the Tri-Rivers Conference title on Tuesday night in Unionville with a 47-40 victory over Scotland County.

The Lady Tigers fell behind early but battled back to make a contest out of it. SCR-I was unable to manage much offense early. Field goals by Cali Holt and Megan Creek weren't enough as The Midgets ran out to a 15-6 first period lead.

The margin swelled to 29-13 at the intermission, as Holt and Creek again provided the lone field goals of the second period.

The Lady Tigers turned the tables in the third period, clamping down defensively and holding Putnam County without a field goal in the third period.

Jessica Morrow scored six points during the stretch as Scotland County trimmed the deficit to 34-27 heading into the final eight minutes.

Courtney Jackson and Hailey Dial connected on three pointers and Putnam County struggled at the free throw line, helping keep SCR-I in the contest. But Putnam's Samantha Shipley was too much in the fourth period. She hit a three pointer and was a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line to help preserve the win. Shipley's performance at the charity stripe offset 3-11 free throw shooting from the rest of her team in the final quarter.

Scotland County dropped to 13-9 on the year and 4-5 in the TRC. Holt and Creek each had 11 points to pace the offense and Morrow finished with eight points.

Shipley led Putnam County (17-6, 9-0 TRC) in scoring with 20 points.
