Defense Helps Lady Tigers Escape Edina With 31-21 Win

Kiley Frazier.

Points have been hard to come by for Scotland County over the past two weeks, but fortunately the Lady Tigers stingy defense has made it even more difficult for the opposition to score. That was the case Friday night in Edina, as SCR-I rallied for a 31-21 win over the Eagles, holding the home team to just two field goals in the second half.

Knox County jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first period as SCR-I continued its shooting slump, hitting just two shots, field goals by Cali Holt and Megan Creek, in the game's first eight minutes.

Hailey Dial trimmed the deficit to 15-12 at the half by nailing a pair of three pointers in the second period.

Creek connected from behind the arc in the third period, and Dial and Holt added field goals. But it was the team's defense that made the difference. Kathleen Hinkle had the lone Knox County field goal of the third period. SCR-I outscored the home team 7-3 to take a 19-18 lead.

It was more of the same in the fourth period. Scotland County's smothering defense held Knox County to just three more points. Holt was perfect 4-4 at the free throw line to help seal the win. SCR-I made six of eight from the charity stripe in the final period to nail down the 31-21 win.

Scotland County improved to 13-8 and 4-4 in the Tri-Rivers Conference. Dial led the way with 12 points and Holt finished with 10 points while Creek pitched in with seven points.

Knox County (8-14, 1-7 TRC) was led in scoring by Hinkle with seven points.
