City, Fitness Center Join Forces for Tournaments

The City of Memphis and the Scotland County Rec/Plex will be joining forces to present a fifth grade basketball tournament on Saturday, February 25th.

Parks Director Allen Garrett announced an agreement with the fitness center board to allow the park's department to host such events at the facility, with a split of the proceeds. He added that future events will be scheduled pending the success of the trial run.

In other parks news, Garrett informed the Memphis City Council at the February 2nd meeting that the swimming pool slide had been repaired. After receiving initial bids of $700 per side plus more than $400 in shipping costs, to have needed repairs made by the manufacturer, Garrett informed the council that Pepsi-Cola Memphis Bottling Company had provided the services at no cost. The sides for the popular park ride were repaired and given a new powder-coating, making them fit for service in 2012 and beyond.

The Johnson Park ball diamond will be receiving a new covering of field conditioner later this spring. Garrett stated that the city could purchase the surface material, which helps the field drain properly and absorbs some moisture to keep the diamond playable in wet conditions, can be bought by the bag or by the ton. While the bags would be more convenient for storage and reapplication, the cost per ton would be $330 as opposed to a bulk ton rate of $185.

Garrett was instructed by the council to determine the required amount for Johnson park and also to contact the SCR-I School District to determine if the school would like to purchase field conditioner for its two ball diamonds. If so, the two parties could share delivery costs, or could make arrangements to pick up the materials and transport them from the Jefferson City retailer.

The parks director indicated the ball diamond at Johnson Park will require some additional sculpting of the reworked dirt, but that the field was nearly ready for application of the field conditioner. A number of summer softball tournaments have already been scheduled at the field for the spring and summer of 2012.
