Vernon R. "Red" Tinkle, 78, of Memphis, MO passed away Monday morning, July 23, 2012, at the V. A. Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. The son of Alfred Everet and Geneva Rose Meldrem Tinkle, he was born December 2, 1933 in Brooklyn, IA.

He was married to Norma Fogle and to this union three sons were born; Larry, Ronnie, and Rick.

On October 11, 1958 he was united to Luella Jane Cookson and to this union five children were born; Brenda, Tammy, Sandi, Roger and Kirt. They lived in Grinnell, IA and later moved to Des Moines, IA where they lived more than 30 years.

Vernon owned and operated Standard Gas Station and Towing in the early 70's. Later he owned and operated A 1 Radiator Repair "A good place to take a leak" for a number of years. In 1992 he took a job as a people greeter at Southside Wal-Mart and was employed about five years. He and Luella moved to MO in 1999.

Vernon served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles #109 in Des Moines, IA. He loved to go camping with his family mainly his own grandchildren.

As his health changed he sat on his porch and waved at everybody that passed by.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Betty Story; four brothers-in-law, Lawrence Ward, Gene Lindenman, Fred Story, Glen Cookson, and his in-laws, Charles and Frances Cookson.

He is survived by his wife, Luella of the home; eight children, Larry and Geneva, Ronnie and Chris all of Memphis, MO, Rick of Brashear, MO, Brenda and her fiancÚ Lyle of State Center, IA, Tammy and Scott of Des Moines, IA, Sandy and Mike of Beaverton, OR, Roger and Chris of Des Moines, IA and Kirt and Kendra of Gering, NE; twenty-four grandchildren; and thirty-five great-grandchildren; along with two sisters, Bonnie Ward of Memphis, MO, and Rosie and Virgil Roorda of Barn City, IA; two brothers, Bill and Fran Tinkle of Grinnell, IA and his twin, Verlan and Iva Tinkle of Malcom, IA; sisters-in-law, Betty Cookson of Grinnell, IA, Wayne and Pat Cookson, of Liberty, IL, Janet and Larry Sparks, of Ewing, MO; and his "Beloved Pet", Elmer; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Memphis Theatre and can be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, Missouri 63555.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 26, 2012, at 10:30 A.M. at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Pastor Larry Smith officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Scotland County, Missouri.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis.
