RICHARD RAY FERGUSON
Richard Ray Ferguson, 94, of rural Memphis, MO, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012, in the Scotland County Hospital.
The son of Walter Spencer and Mary Elizabeth (Phillips) Ferguson, he was born on June 26, 1917 in northeast Scotland County. Richard began elementary school southwest of Cantril, IA, at Highland Center School and then attended Elm School in Clark County from 1926-1929. The family moved to southern Missouri in the fall of 1929 where Richard graduated from eighth grade at Moody school south of West Plains, MO. He then attended high school at the Bakersfield, MO High School.
After his mother's death in July, 1936, Richard and his father returned to Scotland County in the fall of 1937 where they farmed together. Richard entered the United States Army on January 5, 1942. He served as a staff sergeant and spent twenty-eight months overseas in the China, Burma, and India theater. He was discharged on October 12, 1945.
After returning home, Richard continued farming and also worked at Farmers Elevator and Produce from 1958 until July 1, 1972. He was married to Anna May Baker in the First Christian Church in Memphis on July 30, 1972.
Richard enjoyed fishing and enjoyed raising crops and livestock. He attended the First Christian Church in Memphis.
Preceding him in death were his mother in July, 1936; his father in August, 1961; his stepmother, Mildred Ferguson, in April, 1975; a sister who died in infancy; and his wife, Anna May on March 5, 1999.
Survivors include several cousins.
Gravesite services were held on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Memphis Cemetery with Reverend Charles Hammack officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 of Memphis.
