WILLIAM HENRY ADAMS

William Henry Adams, 92, passed away Monday morning, April 23, 2012 at Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, Missouri with his children by his side.
The son of William Francis and Winnie Blanche Martin Adams, he was born on February 25, 1920 near Lawn Ridge in Scotland County. He graduated from Memphis High School. While attending Kirksville State Teachers College, he joined the Military Reserves. He attained his teaching certificate and taught at Bourn School. When the war started, he was called to duty and was the first soldier from Scotland County to answer the call.
On May 19, 1942, Henry married Jeannette Monroe of Memphis at the First Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, Washington, a marriage lasting nearly sixty years until her death, February 28, 2002. To this union, two children were born, William S., and Jane.
He served his country in the Aleutian Islands. After the war, he came back to Scotland County to farm south of Memphis. Later they moved to a farm five miles Northwest of Memphis. In April of 1955 he was appointed by President Eisenhower to serve as Postmaster, a position he held for 25 years. After he retired, Jeannette and Henry moved to Memphis. In 1999, Henry and Jeannette left Memphis and went to La Plata, Missouri to live in a home built for them by their son.
Henry was a charter member of the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 V.F.W. of Memphis, an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis, had belonged to the Lawn Ridge Association, Odd Fellows and Lions Club. He was a Knight Templar, a Royal Arch Mason, a member of the Commandery and the Moila Temple Legion of Honor. He was a fifty year member of Memphis Masonic Lodge #16 AF & AM and a 32nd Degree Mason.
Henry is survived by his sister, Lenore (Leo) Darr of Memphis, his son William S. (Grizz) Adams of La Plata, his daughter, Jane Adams and her long time friend, J. Robert (Bob) Clark of Atalissa, IA, granddaughters, Sonya Beth Adams of Springfield, Mo, Rachel Lynn (Jim) Richardson of Macon, Missouri, and Amanda Jo Schueder (Joe) of Marion, Iowa. Great-grandchildren include Nathaniel, Katelynn, and Delaney Richardson; Lauren and Emma Schueder. He will be greatly missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large circle of friends of all ages.
A Masonic Service was conducted Thursday evening, April 26 by the Memphis Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M.
Funeral services were held at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, on Friday, April 27 with the Reverend Charles McCracken officiating. Music was provided by Alisa Kigar and Joan Hinds. Pallbearers were George Hansen, Dennis Jones, Paul Perry, Scott Smithson, Curtis Franke, and Roy Monroe. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Campbell, Dwight DeRosear, Ted Gundy, Bill Camp, Darrell Harvey, and Steve Van Hara. Burial was in the Memphis Cemetery with full Military Honors given by the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F.W. Post # 4958 of Memphis. The family has requested that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel of Memphis.
