ELMER MYRON KIRKPATRICK
(4/26/1925 - 3/12/2012)



Elmer Myron Kirkpatrick, 86, of Arbela, Missouri, passed away Monday evening, March 12, 2012, at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, Missouri.

The son of Myron Barnes and Ethel (Davis) Kirkpatrick, Elmer was born April 26, 1925, in rural Scotland County. He attended Union Grove Country School eight years and graduated from Memphis High School in 1943. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII, both in the Philippines and in Japan. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sgt. in 1946. Returning home, he bought the farm in 1947 where he changed it from tickle grass and blackberries to the best producing DeKalb corn crop in Missouri, winning the award in 1951.

Elmer married Nelda Jean White, Dec 20, 1947, with Rev. William Longstreth of the First Methodist Church, Memphis, MO, officiating. Elmer was baptized and made a member of said church 1949. Elmer and Nelda have been married 64 years.

Other than farming and raising cattle, Elmer was an over-the-road car hauler for Jack Cooper Transport Company, 1958-1968, starting out in Kansas City and finishing up in Denver, Colorado. He was Scotland County Road and Bridge supervisor five years in the 1970's, and he sold Hamilton Mutual Funds and Insurance both in CO and MO.

Elmer enjoyed membership at the Wallace W. Gillespie VFW Post #4958. He was a member of the Scotland County Fair Board and initiated the first Demolition Derby during his tenure in 1971. Other interests included trips to the Dakotas and Iowa to hunt pheasants, commodity markets, card-playing and casinos, auctions and traveling.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Ellen Margaret Davison and Letha Wilma Musgrove.

Elmer is survived by his wife Nelda, one daughter, Diana Jean Kupko and husband Joe of Victor, Montana, and one son, Stephen Elmer Kirkpatrick, of Arbela, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jodi (Kupko) Flanagan and husband Skye of Baker City, OR, Elizabeth (Kupko) Wood and husband Joe of Dayton, OH, Shaun M. Kupko and fiance, Cristina of Gilbert, AZ, John J. Kupko III and wife Angela of Spokane, WA, and Nathaniel B. Kupko and fiance Emily of Moses Lake, WA; five great-grandchildren, Kaeli E. Flanagan, M. Riley Flanagan, Makenzie K. Flanagan, Joe D. Wood IV, Landon A. Wood, and Monroe Dixon. Other family members include one sister, Angel (Oleva) Chance and her husband Keith, and one brother, Lynn D. Kirkpatrick and his wife Anna Lynn all of Memphis, Missouri, nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

Elmer will be sadly missed by his caring wife, daughter and son, and many others who knew him.

Memorials are suggested to either the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F.W. Post # 4958 of Memphis or the Lawn Ridge Cemetery Association and can be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St. Memphis, Missouri 63555.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Pastor David Howlett and Pastor John Davison officiating. Interment followed in the Lawn Ridge Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F. W. Post # 4958 of Memphis.

Pallbearers were David, Philip and Steve Kirkpatrick, John and Nathan Kupko, Dale Wayne Musgrove, John Davison and Dennis Patton. Honorary pallbearers were Keith Chance, Roger Robinson, Jeffrey McHenry, Glenn Cowell and Russel Lee Mathes.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis.
