Lady Tigers Fall to State-Ranked Van Buren County
Scotland County had an unenviable task heading into the Christmas break, a trip to take on state-ranked Van Buren County. The Lady Tigers crossed the border to Keosauqua, Iowa on Saturday night and dropped a 55-39 decision to the unbeaten Lady Warriors.
SCR-I enjoyed the underdog role early on, taking a 14-10 lead in the first period behind eight points from Megan Creek and five points from Cali Holt.
Van Buren battled back to pull ahead 27-24 at the half. Mckenszie Zeitler was a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line during the quarter as she netted 11 of the Warriors 17 points. Jessica Morrow had a pair of field goals during the second period for SCR-I, which was outscored 17-10.
Hannah Haynes took over in the third period for Van Buren, scoring 10 of her team's 16 points as the home team expanded its lead to 43-30.
The Lady Warriors secured the game at the charity stripe, making eight of 11 free throws in the fourth period. On the night, Van Buren made 15 of 26 free throws, while SCR-I was just six of 14 on free throws.
Van Buren outscored SCR-I 12-9 in the final period to secure the 55-39 victory.
Creek finished with 13 points to lead Scotland County (5-4) in scoring. Holt added nine points.
Haynes led all scorers with 24 points. Zeitler added 15 points for the potent one-two punch for Van Buren County.
