Turnovers Topple Tigers as Warriors Rally in Fourth Quarter

After managing the Van Buren County pressure defense the first half of Saturday's game, the wheels came off for the Tigers in the fourth period when the Warriors returned the full court press.

SCR-I saw a seven point lead slip away in the final six minutes of the contest. The Tigers committed 11 turnovers down the stretch as the press took its toll, allowing Van Buren to rally for the 61-56 win in Keosauqua, IA.

The Tigers matched the high pace offense of the Warriors in the first period. Drew Miller and Cordie Kigar knocked down three pointers while Brock Bondurant put up six points as SCR-I poured in 22 first quarter points but still trailed by one.

The tempo slowed for both squads in the second quarter. Andrew Mathes took over in the paint, scoring eight points from the post to push SCR-I to a 33-33 advantage at the intermission.

"The pace was way too quick for our liking early on," said Coach Lance Campbell. "We slowed things down in the second and third quarters and built a good lead."

Miller helped extend the margin for the Tigers, knocking down a pair of shots from behind the arc. Bondurant continued a strong scoring performance in his final game of the season, adding five points in the third period to put Scotland County on top 49-44. The senior is set to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum suffered during football season.

Van Buren County returned to the full court pressure in the fourth period and it began taking its toll on the Tigers. The Warriors capitalized on turnovers to feed a 17-7 run down the stretch. Dalton Stine scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the final period to lead Van Buren (4-3) to the 61-56 win.

Mathes finished with a season-high 17 points to lead the Tigers, who dropped to 5-4 on the season. Bondurant closed out his basketball career on a high note with 15 points and Miller added nine points.
