The saying goes, defense wins championships. That can be expanded to include conference openers, as Scotland County used its trademark stifling defense to stop North Shelby 46-26 in the team's first Tri-Rivers Conference game of the season on Tuesday in Shelbyville.
The Lady Tigers held North Shelby to single-digit scoring in each of the four quarters.
The Raiders returned the favor in the opening frame, limiting SCR-I to just three field goals. Hailey Dial's three pointer was the difference, as SCR-I led 8-7 at the end of eight minutes of play.
Megan Creek had a pair of field goals in the second period as the offense came to life. Scotland County outscored the Raiders 12-4 to push the margin to 20-11 at the break.
Cali Holt and Creek combined for nine points in the third period as the Lady Tigers grew their lead to 33-20.
Creek finished strong with seven points down the stretch as SCR-I closed the game on a 13-5 run to secure the 46-25 victory.
Scotland County picked up its fourth straight victory to improve to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the TRC. Creek led all scorers with 18 points on the night. Holt and Dial each pitched in with eight points. Elizabeth Linberger led North Shelby (1-2, 0-1) in scoring with 10 points.
