Lady Tigers Advance to Tourney Title Game With 41-36 Win Over Bevier
Cali Holt dribbles through the Bevier defense.
As Hailey Dial's three pointer swished through the net and Scotland County's lead jumped into double digits early in the first quarter, it looked like Scotland County was going to have an easy go of things Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Novinger Tournament. But those points that flowed freely in the opening four minutes of the contest proved much harder to come by for SCR-I in the second half as the Lady Tigers had to hold on for a 41-36 win.
Cali Holt had six quick points and Dial had the other five as SCR-I opened an 11-1 lead with 4:43 left in the opening frame.
Bevier battled back to shrink the margin to 13-6 to close the quarter.
The Lady Wildcats switched to a zone defense in the second period after SCR-I carved up the man-to-man pressure early on.
Jessica Morrow breaks the Bevier press.
The change had little impact on the Lady Tigers to start the second period. Megan Creek, Dial and Courtney Jackson all connected on jump shots from the perimeter. Back-to-back field goals by Kiley Frazier and Jessica Morrow on offensive rebounds helped extend the lead to 27-12 at the break.
That momentum carried over to start the second half. Dial and Jackson connected on jumpers before Morrow converted on the fast break on a nifty pass from Holt to make the score 33-15 and force a Bevier timeout.
The Lady Wildcats continued to pack the zone defense in the paint in the third quarter and it finally started paying dividends.
The Lady Tigers managed just one point in the final five and half minutes of the quarter.
Bevier trimmed the deficit to 34-22 heading into the final period.
SCR-I started the fourth quarter much like the third. Creek drilled a jump shot before Morrow converted on the fast break. A put back by Katie Howard once again had SCR-I poised on the doorstep of blowing the game open.
But once again, the Bevier defense shutdown the Lady Tigers scoring. The Lady Wildcats got their offense going, scoring the game's final 10 points but time ran out on the rally as Scotland County held on for the 41-36 win.
Holt led Scotland County (2-1) in scoring with 10 points. Dial finished with nine points while Morrow added eight points.
Bevier's Dominica Prokup led all scorers with 15 points on the night as her Wildcats fell to 1-1 on the season.
