Clark County Rallies Late to Spoil Lady Tigers Season Opener

Kiley Frazier puts up the shot over the Clark County defense during the Lady Tigers season opener in Kahoka on November 22nd.

In a game filled with scoring spurts it was Clark County putting on the final run of the night to pull away from Scotland County in the two teams' varsity basketball season opener on Tuesday, November 22nd in Kahoka.

The Lady Tigers opened the game in impressive fashion, using an aggressive 1-2-2 zone defense to generate turnovers and fuel an 11-0 run early in the first period to erase a 4-0 deficit. Courtney Jackson knocked down SCR-I's first bucket of the season and Jessica Morrow followed with a transition score off a Clark County turnover. Hailey Dial connected on a three pointer before Cali Holt scored on the fast break to force a Clark County time out with 3:39 left in the opening period.

The Lady Indians made the necessary adjustments and Clark County closed the first period on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 12-11. SCR-I had to contend with some early foul trouble as Megan Creek went to the bench after being whistled for her third personal.

Morrow scored on an offensive rebound to put SCR-I on top 13-12 to start the second period. It was the final lead of the first half for SCR-I as the two teams traded buckets much of the remainder of the second period. The junior added another score in the paint for SCR-I followed up by a hoop from Dial. Cali Holt knocked down a three pointer to pull SCR-I within two, but the Indians went to the locker room leading 24-20.

SCR-I came out of the intermission rolling. Morrow scored on an offensive rebound and then followed it up with a transition score after Creek grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast to coast, finding her junior teammate with a nice pass for the open look.

This time a Clark County time out did not stop the Lady Tigers. Creek scored on a drive to the hoop followed by a jumper by Jackson to put SCR-I ahead 28-24.

But both Creek and Jackson went to the bench with four fouls midway through the third period, stealing SCR-I's momentum.

The Lady Tigers were able to maintain the lead thanks to the play of Holt. She scored on a fast break and then hit a wide open Kiley Frazier on a backdoor play. The senior guard then stole the inbounds pass and scored just before the buzzer to put her team on top 34-32.

The wheels came off for Scotland County in the fourth quarter. Turnovers had hampered the squad most of the game, but finally came back to bite the team in the final period.

Clark County opened the final eight minutes of play with a 10-0 during which time Jackson and Morrow both fouled out.

Down by 10 points, Frazier sparked a rally with back-to-back scores before Creek stole an inbounds pass and scored, making the margin 44-40 with 2:15 left to play.

SCR-I couldn't get any closer. Holt hit a late three pointer but it wasn't enough as the Indians held on for the 50-43 victory.

Holt led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 12 points. Morrow finished with 10 points and Jackson and Frazier each added six points.

Clark County was led in scoring by Megan Brennan with 14 points and Kailey Roberts with 12 points. Clark County made 15 of 34 free throws while SCR-I was 0-5 at the charity stripe.
