Senior Starting Squad Hoping to Lead SCR-I to Successful Hoops Season

Despite graduating three key contributors from last season's squad, the Scotland County Tigers will head into the 2011-12 basketball campaign with one of the most experienced teams in the region.

Coach Lance Campbell will be starting five seniors when the season tips off the week.

"When you watch these guys at practice, the continuity makes it easy to keep this lineup on the court," said Campbell. "They play so well together and communicate to the point that I often don't even have to orchestrate changes or transitions because they beat me to it."

Point guard Drew Miller will return for his fourth and final season as a starter. He'll be key to SCR-I's success, not only as the top scoring threat from the perimeter as demonstrated by his 18-point outburst versus North Shelby last year, but even more importantly for his ball handling skills.

"I suspect most games you are going to see Drew on the court for 32 minutes," Campbell said. "We're definitely going to have to pick our spots to get him some breathers."

Miller will be flanked on the wings by fellow seniors Harley Stone and Brock Bondurant.

"Both these guys are capable of playing just about anywhere on the court," Campbell stated. "Where they line up on offense is going to depend on multiple variables, like who has the hot hand or who has the better matchup versus their defender."

Andrew Mathes and Derrick Muntz will start in the post for the Tigers. Muntz is a full-year removed from a knee injury that cost him most of his sophomore season. At full-strength he will be a force to reckon with in the paint.

Mathes gives the squad a pair of potent scoring threats in the post. The senior put up 20 points versus the talented interior defense of Putnam County, and coach Campbell is expecting more of those type of games this year.

The team will look to the program's lone junior, Zach Miller, as well as a pair of sophomores, Cordie Kigar and Brice Cowell to provide depth for the senior laden starting lineup.

Kigar picked up some varsity experience as a freshman, and gives the team a boost from the perimeter.

That shooting touch will be needed to help replace the loss of graduates Dakota Wells, Kasey Dial and Sabe Sears.

"We're definitely going to miss those guys ability to knock down the three pointers, but I think our lineup is more balanced and I like the things we can do off the dribble and on defense," Campbell stated.

One new look this year will be some 1-3-1 zone trapping on defense.

"With our size and athletic ability, we want to be able to generate some transition baskets off of turnovers and our defensive pressure so we don't have to always depend on the half court offense," Campbell said.
