Brashear Upsets SCR-I In Softball District Semifinals
Scotland County played extra innings on Thursday night at the Class 1 District 11 Tournament but the lady Tigers season came to an end sooner than expected when Brashear scored twice in the eighth frame to upset SCR-I 5-3 in the district semifinals.
Brashear pulled ahead 1-0 in the top of the third inning when a pair of errors allowed an unearned run to cross the plate.
Scotland County pulled even in the top of the fourth. Bethany Rader led off with a double. She scored on an RBI single by Loren Smith to make the score 1-1.
The senior catcher delivered again in the sixth inning. Smith cracked a two-out double to plate Rader. She came in to score on a base hit by Hailey Dial, making the score 3-1 in favor of SCR-I.
But a pair of costly errors on Scotland allowed Brashear to tie the score in the seventh and force extra innings.
A leadoff double by Cierra Hines in the top of the eighth chased starter Bethany Rader. Kristen Love greeted reliever Megan Creek with a base hit that plated Hines with the go-ahead run. Love came in to score on an error that pushed the lead to 5-3.
Hines retired the side in order in the bottom of the eight to end Scotland County's season with the 5-3 defeat.
Rader took the loss, allowing four runs, just one earned, on three hits and one walk. She struck out five. Scotland County committed seven errors in the contest. Creek allowed one unearned run on one hit and struck out one in her inning of work.
Hines picked up the win for #3 seed Brashear. She held #2 seed SCR-I to six hits over eight innings while striking out 16.
Smith was a perfect 3-3 at the plate, closing out her senior season with nine hits in her last 10 at bats. Creek and Rader both went 1-4 and Dial was 1-3. Scotland County ended the season with a 12-7 record.
