Late Rally Falls Short in 3-2 Loss for Lady Tigers

A seventh inning rally came up just short for the Scotland County softball team on Monday night in Lancaster as the Lady Tigers fell to Schuyler County 3-2.

The two teams locked horns in a pitchers' duel through the first three frames. Bethany Rader had a perfect game going heading into the bottom of the fourth inning when she ran into trouble. A hit batter followed by a walk put the pressure on the defense, which committed two errors to allow the Rams to pull ahead 2-0 and forced coach Kim Small to go to the bullpen.

Megan Creek struck out the last two batters of the inning to keep SCR-I close.

Unfortunately the Lady Tigers had no answers for Rams starter Alexis Boas. The team had a runner in scoring position every inning but the first, and could not push across any runs until the seventh inning.

Schuyler County made it 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth and the insurance run proved crucial.

Katie Howard led off the team's final at bat with a base on balls. Shaye Wright pinch hit and drew a walk before both runners moved into scoring position on a ground out by Elizabeth Duzan. Creek plated both runs with a drive to right field. But she was stranded at first base as Boas recorded the final two outs for the victory.

Rader took the loss on the mound despite not allowing a hit. She pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs on a walk and a hit by pitch. She struck out five. Creek allowed one run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. She walked one and struck out seven of the eight outs she recorded.

Loren Smith was a perfect 3-3 at the plate for Scotland County in her final regular season game. Fellow senior Duzan was 1-2.

The loss ends Scotland County's regular season with a record of 11-6 and 2-3 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.
