Key Plays Keep SCR-I on Top of Raiders in 5-4 Win
OUT BY A STEP - Hailey Dial squeezes the throw from Courtney Jackson to just get the North Shelby runner at first base.
Scotland County came up with key play after key play on Tuesday night to escape Shelbyville with a 5-4 Tri-Rivers Conference win.
Megan Creek got SCR-I off on the right foot as she cranked a leadoff home run to put her team ahead 1-0.
North Shelby had runners at second and third, courtesy of a pair of fielding errors, before Bethany Rader struck out the side to end the threat.
She wasn't as fortunate in the second inning, when the Lady Raiders pulled ahead 2-1.
Scotland County battled back to regain the lead in the top of the third inning. Creek opened in the inning with a double. After Randi Slaughter reached base with a single, Rader delivered a two-run double. She came around to score when Brianna Priebe reached on an error to give Scotland County a 4-2 advantage.
North Shelby trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the frame but it could have been worse. Third baseman, Courtney Jackson, cut down a runner at the plate before center fielder, Elizabeth Duzan, ended the inning by throwing out a runner at home to keep her team ahead 4-3.
Scotland County stranded runners at third base in the next two frames before finally tacking on an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Duzan doubled with one out and came into score on an RBI groundout by Creek to push the lead to 5-3.
The run proved important, as North Shelby cut into the advantage in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff walk and an error opened the door for North Shelby to make the score 5-4. But with runners on second and third, Rader struck out the final batter to end the rally.
She retired the side in order in the seventh to seal the 5-4 win. The sophomore allowed four runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out 13.
Creek was a single away from hitting for the cycle. She went 3-4 with a double, triple and home run. Rader was 1-4 with 2 RBI. Duzan and Slaughter both went 1-3.
The win moves SCR-I to 10-5 on the season and 2-2 in the TRC heading into the season finale versus Schuyler County on October 3rd.
