Extra Outs Allow Rams to Ruin SCR-I's Run at Tourney Title
Championship softball teams don't give their opponents extra outs. Scotland County reinforced that adage as the Lady Tigers saw the title of the Schuyler County tournament slip away in a 8-5 loss to the host school on Saturday evening in Lancaster.
SCR-I struck first, tallying a run in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of an RBI single by Bethany Rader.
Schuyler County pulled even in the top of the second inning when a two-out error extended the inning.
That was a theme over the next three frames as key miscues by the Lady Tigers defense gave Schuyler County extra outs.
The Rams tallied two runs in the top of the third when a two-out error kept the inning alive.
Scotland County battled back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. Elizabeth Duzan singled to start the rally. She scored on a passed ball. A walk to Megan Creek was the source of the other run. She crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Rader to make it 3-3.
But fielding miscues in the top of the fourth cost SCR-I the lead for good. Two of the three runs charged to Creek in the fourth were unearned.
Schuyler tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning, but left the bases loaded.
SCR-I cut the deficit to 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth. Walks to Creek, Rader and Brianna Priebe loaded the bases for Loren Smith, who plated two runs with a base hit to make the score 8-5.
But SCR-I was unable to mount anymore offense in the final two innings.
Creek took the loss on the mound, going five innings and allowing eight runs, three earned, on nine hits and three walks while striking out four. Rader pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three.
SCR-I was held to just four hits on the night. They did work the opposing pitcher for six base on balls.
The loss drops the team to 9-5 on the season.
