Lady Tigers Survive Scare in Tourney Opener
As the second seed in the Knox County softball tourney on Saturday, the Lady Tigers were expected to cruise past #7 seed Marion County in the opening round. And after a third-inning scare, that's just what they did, posting a 7-3 win.
Scotland County took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Randi Slaughter walked and stole second base. After a walk to Bethany Rader, Brianna Priebe delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0.
The margin went to 3-0 in the second inning. Cali Holt reached on an error and came around to score on a triple by Elizabeth Duzan. She scored on a passed ball.
But the Mustangs rallied to tie the score 3-3 in the top of the third. After allowing a pair of hits, SCR-I committed three errors that allowed Marion County to plate three unearned runs off Rader. Megan Creek took over in relief with one out and the bases loaded. She worked out of the jam to keep the score knotted.
SCR-I regained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Hailey Dial tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Holt to make it 4-3.
The following inning, Rader walked and came around to score when Loren Smith reached on an error making the margin 5-3.
Scotland County tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Duzan reached on an error and Creek belted a two-run homer to make the final margin 7-3.
Creek picked up the victory on the mound in relief. She worked the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out four. Rader was tagged with three unearned runs in 2 1/3 innings of work during which she allowed just two hits.
