First Loss of Season Ends SCR-I's Tourney Title Hopes

The winds of change blew through Saturday evening, dropping temperatures and a bit of rain on the softball fields of Knox County. The transition seemed to carry over on the field as well, where Scotland County suffered its first loss of the season as the bats went silent and the glove work wasn't what it had been during the six game winning streak.

Knox County bested SCR-I 13-4 to win the Knox County Tournament Saturday evening.

The Eagles jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first.

The Lady Tigers tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of a pair of Knox County errors that set the table for an RBI single by Loren Smith.

Megan Creek gave up a pair of hits to start the second before rallying to strike out the side and keep the score tied.

Knox County went ahead 2-1 in the top of the third inning, scoring an unearned run after an SCR-I error.

The Lady Tigers missed a scoring chance in the third. Creek led off with a double and stole third base. But she was stranded.

The wheels came off for SCR-I in the top of the fifth. Knox County sent nine batters to the plate and score five runs without the benefit of a hit. The Eagles took advantage of three walks and three Lady Tigers errors to build a 7-1 bulge. Bethany Rader came in to record the final two outs of the inning.

The Lady Tigers tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 3-2. Elizabeth Duzan and Creek had back-to-back singles to open the inning. They both were able to score without the benefit of another hit.

It was nearly a repeat in the top of the sixth inning for Knox County, when eight batters went to the plate, allowing Knox to tack on five more runs.

The Eagles weren't done, adding two more runs in the top of the seventh to make the final margin 14-3.

Scotland County managed just five hits on the night. Creek was 3-4 with a pair of doubles.

She took the loss on the mound, despite allowing just one earned run. She was charged with six runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. The junior allowed four hits and walked four while striking out seven.

Rader pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief allowing eight runs, five earned, on six hits. She struck out two.

SCR-I dropped to 6-1 on the season.
