Lady Tigers Hammer Highland in Softball Season Opener

Courtney Jackson dives back into first base to avoid the pick off throw during the Lady Tigers opener versus Highland.

The 2011 Scotland County softball season got off to a good start with a 13-4 victory over Highland on August 22nd in Memphis. SCR-I overcame some sloppy play on defense to post the big win.

Highland jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning, with a pair of hits off starter Megan Creek. The junior worked out of a big jam, striking out a pair of batters with the bases loaded to limit the damage.

SCR-I battled back in the bottom of the frame to pull ahead 2-1. Creek led off with a base hit. Randi Slaughter reached on a bunt single before Bethany Rader delivered a RBI single. Slaughter scored on a RBI groundout by Brianna Priebe.

The Lady Tigers made it 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of a couple Highland errors. Priebe singled and scored during the rally.

Highland trimmed the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the fourth inning. The Lady Cougars scored three unearned runs courtesy of two of SCR-I's six errors on the night.

But the Lady Tigers rebounded in the bottom of the frame to put the contest away. Elizabeth Duzan led off the inning with a base hit. She stole second and came into score on a base hit by Creek. After Rader was hit by a pitch, Loren Smith delivered an RBI groundout. Priebe followed with a run-scoring single that made the score 9-4.

Scotland County padded the margin in the bottom of the fifth inning, tacking on four more runs. Duzan and Slaughter both singled before Rader drove home the dup with a base hit. Singles by Smith and Priebe made the score 13-4.

That was more than enough run support for Creek, who allowed just two hits in the final six innings to pick up the win. Only one of the four runs allowed by Creek was earned. She gave up four hits and walked three while striking out 11.

Priebe paced the offense, going 3-4 with three runs batted in. Rader also drove in three with a 2-3 performance at the plate. Creek, Slaughter and Duzan were all 2-4 at the dish.
