Golfers Brave Heat to Compete in Timber Ridge Calcutta

Fourteen teams ignored a heat advisory by the National Weather Service, braving the high temperatures and humidity on Sunday to take part in the four-man calcutta golf tournament held at Timber Ridge Golf Course in Memphis.

The teams teed off at 8 a.m. and played nine holes to establish the two flights.

Team Drummond opened the day with a 25, which is nine under par, to sit atop the leader board. Four other teams were within four strokes of the lead to set the championship flight.

Three teams carded a four-under-par round of 30 in the first nine holes to set atop the leader board in the A flight, which featured nine teams with scores ranging from 30 to 37.

The 56 golfers returned following lunch to play 18 more holes of golf, vying for top honors in the 18-hole calcutta, as well as the combined 27-hole score for the overall tournament.

Team Drummond cooled off in the afternoon and finished with a round of 58, that dropped them out of contention.

Team Chisham, which was one stroke off the lead heading into the afternoon, closed out the day with a 54 in the calcutta to shoot a round of 80. The Monroe City team's total of 22-under par was tops in the championship flight.

Team Shalley and Team Lunsford shot rounds of 53 to tie for first in the calcutta. That gave team Lunsford, which was out of Kirksville, a tie for second place in the tournament with Team Schooley from Bloomfield, IA. Both teams finished with rounds of 81 overall.

Team Shalley, which consisted of Dave and Marcus Shalley, Kyle Lister and Mike Frazier, won the playoff to take top honors in the calcutta. Team Schooley won the tie breaker to take second in the tournament.

In the A flight, it was team Cockrell from Canton taking home first place in both the calcutta and the tournament. They shot a 56 to win the calcutta, after opening in a tie for first place with a first round score of 30, for an overall score of 86.

That was one stroke better than team Briscoe, which shot a 57 to take second place in the calcutta and finish up the day with an 87 for second place in the A flight tournament. Team Small, consisting of Andy Mallett, Jared Shelley, Kevin Small and Josh Scobee, was third in the tournament with a score of 90. They also tied for third with a score of 60 in the calcutta. Team McBee, Josh, Zach, Jake and Jim also shot a 60 in the calcutta, finishing with a 92 overall.
