12-Year-Old Racer Takes Checkers in Late Model Feature at Scotland County Speedway

by Brian Neal

Finally, after five straight weeks of rain outs, the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, MO was able to get a Saturday night weekly race in. When the final checkers fell on the night Steven DeLonjay (UMP Modifieds), Beau Taylor (Stock Cars), Mike Shelton (SportMods), Steve Allen (Hobby Stocks), and Todd Nelson (Hornets) picked up their first wins of the season at the track, while 12-year-old Jake Griffin (ULMA Late Models) claimed his second win of the season.

The first feature of the night was the 10-lap Hornets, with Devin Still and Travis DeMint drawing the front row. DeMint grabbed the lead on the drop of the green flag, with Still and Todd Nelson close behind. The three would go into turn 3 on lap 3 three wide for the lead, with Nelson coming out of turn 4 to grab the top spot. Nelson then pulled away over the final 7 laps, in a caution free race, to pick up the win. DeMint settled for 2nd, Still was 3rd, Darin Smith was 4th, with Josh Kendrick taking home a fifth place finish.

Up next was the 15 lap Hobby Stock feature, with Mike Kincaid and Ben Grove leading the field to the green flag. The first two cautions of the event would come out before lap 1 could be complete, as the first one was for a bad start. On the restart Kincaid lost a driveshaft going into turn 1 to bring the yellow back on. Nick Ulin moved out into the lead on the next restart, with Steve Allen close behind in 2nd. Ulin then held off Allen until lap 4 when he slipped under him to grab the lead. But Ulin wouldn't give up, as he got back by Allen on lap 6 to grab the top spot back. Ulin then held the lead until lap 11 when he spun in turn 4 and collected Derek Kirkland and Tony Teninty to bring out the final yellow of the race. On the restart Allen inherited the top spot and then held on over the final 4 laps to claim his first win of the season at the speedway. Clayton Crump came from 9th to finish in 2nd, Tim Pettibone started 7th and finished in 3rd, Andrew Hustead came from 13th to take home 4th, with Vic Sanders coming home in 5th.

Mike Shelton and Ryan Fullenkamp led the field to the green in the 12 lap SportMod feature, with Shelton jumping out front on lap 1. Shelton then pulled away to lead all 12 laps, in a caution free race, to pick up his first win of the season at the track. Brandon Dale came home in 2nd, Jim Walker was 3rd, Fullenkamp was 4th, with Rusty Sands rounding out the top 5.

The 12 lap ULMA Late Model feature was up next, with Tommy Cordroy and 12 year old Jake Griffin drawing the front row for the event. Griffin would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Cordroy. Griffin then started to pull away from the field when the only caution of the event came out on lap 9, as David Janes spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Griffin moved back out front and then held on over the final 3 laps to pick up his second win of the season at the speedway. Cordroy settled for 2nd, Justin Jennings was 3rd, Danny Lorton came from 7th to finish in 4th, with Dick Weber coming home in 5th.

Russell Tobias and Brian Clark led the field to the drop of the green in the 15 lap Stock Car feature, with Tobias jumping out front on lap 1. Tobias would hold the lead until lap 2, when he spun in front of the field in turn 3 to bring out the only caution of the event. On the restart Mike Harward grabbed the lead over Derek Kirkland and Clark. Beau Taylor would move past Kirkland for second on lap 7 and then went to work on Harward for the top spot. Harward would hold back Taylor until lap 13 when his left front broke going into turn 1, which caused Taylor to get into him and get him sideways. Taylor would take over the top spot, as Harward fell back to 5th. Taylor then went on to lead the final 2 laps to claim his first win of the season at the track. Kirkland settled for 2nd, Clark was 3rd, Tobias recovered from his lap 1 spin to finish in 4th, with Harward holding on for 5th.

The final feature of the night was the 20 lap UMP Modifieds, with Steve Grotz and Steven DeLonjay drawing the front row. The first two yellows of the event would come out before lap 1, as the first was for debris in turn 1. On the restart Dental Williams would spin coming out of turn 4 to bring the yellow light back on. DeLonjay would jump out into the lead on the next restart, with Grotz close behind. But Grotz would slow to a stop in turn 2 on lap 2 to bring the caution out and end his run up front. On the next restart DeLonjay again moved out front, with David Wietholder, who started 6th, moving into 2nd. DeLonjay would lead all 20 laps, as the last 18 laps ran caution free, to pick up his first win of the season at the speedway. Wietholder held on for 2nd, Vance Wilson came from 12th to finish in 3rd, Danny Crane started 9th and came home in 4th, with Robbie Reed coming from 11th to round out the top 5.
