Tigers Advance in Playoffs With Walk-off Win
It came down to the wire, to the final out as a matter of fact, but Scotland County advanced to the second round of the Class 2 District 8 tournament in Unionville on Monday, May 16th. SCR-I broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat South Shelby 4-3.
SCR-I jumped on top early, with a run in the bottom of the first. Drew Miller walked and moved into scoring position on a base hit by Brock Bondurant. Andrew Mathes followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0.
Cordie Kigar blanked the Cardinals through four innings of work on the mound. South Shelby went on top 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning, stringing together two walks and four base hits to pull ahead of the Tigers.
SCR-I battled back to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bondurant led off with a base hit. Kigar singled and both runners came in to score when Ben Shannan reached on an error, making the score 3-3.
The game looked poised to go extra innings, as the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh were retired. Miller worked a two-out walk and advanced to scoring position with a walk to Bondurant. SCR-I celebrated the win when Miller crossed the plate as Mathes reached safely on an error to give the Tigers the 4-3 win.
Ben Shannan picked up the victory on the mound in relief of Harley Stone, who was forced out of the game with a hand injury, after pitching one inning.
Shannan allowed one hit and walked none while striking out four to notch the victory. Kigar allowed no runs in four innings, limiting the Cardinals to three hits while walking three and hitting a batter. He struck out three.
Bondurant finished 2-3 at the plate to pace the offense. Miller was 0-1, but walked three times and scored twice, including the game winner. Mathes was 14 with 2 RBI.
