Memphis FFA Trapshooters Blast Away Competition at State

On April 30, 2011, the Memphis FFA Trapshooting Teams traveled to Linn Creek, MO to compete at the State FFA Trapshoot where students from 77 schools and 188 squads competed for the coveted bragging rights of being the top shooters in the state. Each student shot 100 clays with a 25 clay practice the morning of the shoot as well as 50 clays on Friday. The A Team shot an impressive 444/500 while the B Team chased them with a 431/500. During this event, 5 out of the 10 competing for Memphis shot a 90 or above including Bryce Smith, Brice Cowell, Andrew Humes, Austin Smith and Ben Shannan. The A Team placed 7th in the state out of 40 FFA teams and the B Team placed 12th.

Bryce Smith shot an impressive 98/100 at the state shoot and qualified for the shoot off for senior shooters, he placed 3rd in that division out of 103, and 9th overall in the entire shoot out of 774 students. Brice Cowell shot a 95/100 and placed 5th in the Freshman division of the shoot.

"Both teams shot very well and should be commended for their hard work and dedication to this sport," said FFA advisor Cassie Whitlock.

She praised the efforts of coach Dave Koch for his endless commitment to the FFA Trap team and his support of the students.

"We couldn't have succeeded without him," Whitlock stated.

The team's efforts were supported by the FFA Alumni group, which managed the trapshooting funds and purchased shooting glasses for each participant.

Whitlock also applauded the support team members received from their parents and the community which helped fund the sport via several fundraisers, as well as the school district, which funded the trip to the state event.

"This is an opportunity the students will never forget," she said.
