Tigers Hold Off Putnam County in 13-5 Victory

It was a little too close for comfort for fans, but Scotland County held off a late rally by Putnam County in the first game of a Tri Rivers Conference double header in Memphis on Monday, May 9th.

The Midgets pulled within 7-5 before the Tigers put the game away in their final at bat to win 13-5.

SCR-I jumped on top 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Sabe Sears led off with a triple and scored when Drew Miller reached on an error. Brock Bondurant, Andrew Mathes and Rod Sears followed with base hits to help build the lead.

The Tigers tacked on two more tallies in the third inning. Mathes doubled and Rod Sears followed with a two-run homer to make it 6-0.

But the Midgets trimmed the deficit to 6-2 in the top of the fourth courtesy of a pair of unearned runs.

Bondurant singled and scored on an RBI base hit by Cordie Kigar to push the lead to 7-2.

The Midgets chased starter Harley Stone in the top of the sixth inning. The junior hurler had worked out of a bases loaded jam to close the fourth and had done similar work in the fifth. But after the first two batters reached in the sixth, Coach T.J. Duncan turned to Ben Shannan in relief.

Putnam County took advantage of a pair of hit batsmen as well as two walks to plate three runs and pull within 7-5.

The Tigers took the momentum back in the bottom of the frame, pushing six runs across the plate to create more breathing room. The key blow was a two-run triple by Andrew Mathes that narrowly missed being a home run. Drew Miller's shot to left field cleared the fence to cap off the big finish.

Stone picked up the victory, going five innings. He allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits, five walks and two hit batsmen. He struck out seven. Shannan recorded the save, pitching the final two innings. he gave up one run on two hits, with two walks and two hit batsmen. He struck out three.

Mathes led the offense, going 3-4 with four RBI. Miller and Rod Sears each homered. Rod was 2-3 with 3 RBI while Miller was 2-5. Sabe Sears was 3-5 on the game.
