Tigers Pound Putnam County 23-6 in Conference Baseball Action
After a week of rainouts, the Scotland County baseball team finally got back on the field Thursday night in Unionville. SCR-I celebrated the return to action with a hit parade en route to blasting the Midgets 23-6 to extend the team's winning streak to seven games and pick up a key conference win.
The Tigers took control of the contest in the top of the first inning, batting around to post six runs, all with two outs. Brock Bondurant started the rally when he reached on an error. Ben Shannan delivered an RBI double and scored on a base hit by Cordie Kigar. Walks to Andrew Mathes and Rod Sears loaded the bases before Dakota Wells, Harley Stone and Sabe Sears delivered back-to-back-to back RBI singles to make the score 6-0.
Putnam County battled back in the bottom of the frame to trim the deficit to 6-3. Stone settled down on the mound, blanking Putnam County over the next three innings with another solid pitching performance.
The same could not be said for the Putnam County defense.
SCR-I tacked on a pair of tallies in the second inning when Mathes drove in a pair of runs with a base hit to push the lead to 8-3.
The Tigers sent eight batters to the plate in the third inning, pushing the advantage to 12-3. The key blow in the four-run inning was a bases loaded hit by Drew Miller.
Scotland County put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth inning, batting around for the second time in the game. Miller again delivered a bases-loaded hit and Kigar and Rod Sears also contributed RBI singles to make the score 21-3. Wells, Stone and Sabe Sears each scored twice in the nine-run inning.
The Tigers scored two more times in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of three walks and an error.
Putnam County benefited from two SCR-I errors in the bottom of the inning to score three unearned runs but it wasn't nearly enough to extend the contest, which was called by the 10-run rule after five innings with the final margin of 23-6.
Stone picked up the win on the mound, working five innings, allowing 6 runs, three earned on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Sabe Sears was 3-4 with three runs scored and 3 RBI to lead the offense. Drew Miller was 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBI and Kigar went 2-4 with three runs scored and three RBI.
