Stone Tosses One-Hitter to Ground Eagles

Scotland County made it four straight wins as Harley Stone just missed a no-hitter on Monday night in Memphis allowing the Tigers to topple Knox County 10-0 in varsity baseball action.

The junior hurler used a sweeping curveball to keep the Eagles hitters off balance all night long. Knox County was down to its final out in the sixth inning, when the no-hitter was broken up with a single to center field. Overall, Knox County managed four base runners, reaching on an error in the first inning as well as a pair of hits batsmen.

Stone completed the shutout, working six innings, walking none and striking out a season-best 15 batters. Only four of the 22 batters Stone faced were able to put the ball in play during the dominating performance.

Scotland County got some work done at the plate as well. The Tigers jumped on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Sabe Sears led off with a triple and scored on a base hit by Drew Miller. Miller crossed the plate on an RBI double by Andrew Mathes.

The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the second inning when SCR-I loaded the bases on back-to-back-to-back singles by Rod Sears, Sabe Sears and Cordie Kigar. Miller drove home two with a base hit before Kigar crossed the plate on an RBI ground out by Ben Shannan.

Stone opened the third inning with a double. After walks to Dakota Wells and Sabe Sears loaded the bases, Kigar delivered a two-run single to make the score 7-0.

Scotland County ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs to invoke the 10-run rule. Shannan started the inning with a base hit. A single by Mathes and a walk to Stone loaded the bases. Shannan was forced out at the plate on a groundball off the bat of Andrew Humes, but the throw to first base for the attempted double play sailed over the first baseman's head, allowing two runs to score and Humes to end up on third base. Wells then ended the game with a base hit to drive in Humes.

Kigar and Sabe Sears were both 3-3 in the game. Mathes went 3-4 and Miller was 2-4 with three RBI.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 4-2 on the season.
