Tigers' Bats Power Team to Tri-Rivers Tournament Title
After a slow start at the plate in the first two games of the year, Scotland County's bats came to life Saturday in Unionville. SCR-I pounded Green City 11-0 before blasting Putnam County 15-2 to claim the tourney championship.
Harley Stone pitched a complete game shutout in the opener. The junior allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out 10 in five innings of work.
He got the scoring started with a leadoff single in the second inning. He stole second base and moved into scoring position on a base hit by Cordie Kigar. Andrew Mathes plated both runs with a base hit to make it 2-0. The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the frame, with the key at bats, an RBI single from Sabe Sears and a RBI double by Brock Bondurant.
Scotland County put the game out of reach in the fourth inning. Andrew Humes started the inning with a base hit. After Sears reached on an error, Drew Miller plated two with a single to make the score 7-0. Ben Shannan drove in a pair of runs with a base hit before SCR-I tacked on two more tallies courtesy of Green City errors to make the final margin 11-0.
The Tigers wasted little time putting game two out of reach, batting around in the top of the first inning en route to a 10-0 lead over Putnam County.
Drew Miller collected two hits in the inning, including a three-run home run. Miller, Sabe Sears and Bondurant all crossed the plate twice during the huge inning.
Humes and Sabe Sears drove in runs with hits in the second inning to make the score 12-0. SCR-I added three more tallies in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 15-0.
Putnam County pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but it wasn't enough to prevent the 10-run rule.
Shannan allowed two runs on four hits. He walked three and hit a batter while striking out six in five innings of work to run his record to 1-1 on the year.
The Tigers improved to 2-2 on the season overall.
Miller led the offensive onslaught, going 3-4 with three runs scored and 5 RBI. Rod Sears was 2-3 with two runs scored and pair of RBI. Sabe Sears was 2-3 with an RBI double and two runs scored and Humes was 2-4 with two RBI.
