Third Time Not The Charm

Three point-blank shots for Scotland County were turned away in a 32-31 loss to Putnam County.

There are some nights it seems as if it was just not meant to be. That's how the Lady Tigers must have felt Tuesday night after the Lady Tigers watched three point-blank shots bounce in and out before time expired on a one-point loss to Putnam County.

The loss was made even harder to swallow for SCR-I as senior center Jamie Shaw crumpled to the floor as the clock wound down to zero. The officials appeared to blow the whistle for a foul, but after a brief discussion ruled that time had expired despite the fact the horn had never sounded the end of the game. Shaw had to be helped off the court, a sight that is becoming all too familiar to Scotland County fans who have seen two starters lost to knee injuries this year.

As it turned out Shaw, was not the SCR-I starter needing medical attention following the contest. Skyler Alderton was sent to the ER for stitches to close a wound opened on her forehead midway through the contest. The senior guard returned from the locker room, bandaged and was able to finish the game but ultimately required 10 stitches.

Prior to the injury, Alderton had been carrying the SCR-I offense. She had four of SCR-I 's six first quarter points as the score was knotted 6-6 after one period.

The Lady Tigers pulled ahead 18-16 at the intermission behind five points from Alderton.

Alderton knocked down a pair of shots before leaving the floor in the third period with the injury. The lead was trimmed to 29-28 heading into the final period.

Neither team could buy a basket in the final period as the squads combined for just three field goals in the game's final eight minutes. Two of those were by Putnam County, which pulled ahead 32-31 late in the contest.

A miss on the offensive end forced SCR-I to foul after Putnam County went into a delay. That process ate up valuable time off the clock, as SCR-I only had three team fouls at the time. However SCR-I came up with a steal with 31 seconds left to play as Ashley Tague made a big defensive stop.

Jamie Shaw was fouled on the ensuing possession but was unable to connect on the free throw.

Putnam County returned the favor, missing the front end of a one-and-one. After a Hailey Dial rebound, SCR-I got three great looks at the basket but could not get any of the shots to fall, allowing the Midgets to prevail 32-31.

Alderton finished with 13 points to lead all scorers. Scotland County fell to 15-7 on the year and 6-3 in the Tri-Rivers Conference. Putnam County (11-12, 5-4 TRC) was led in scoring by Dakoda Owings with eight points.
