Tigers Reign Over Knox County 43-38 in Courtwarming Win

Scotland County's defense clamped down in the final three minutes of Friday night's victory over Knox County insuring the Tigers could do the victory dance at the Courtwarming festivities following the contest.

The 2011 basketball king and queen were crowned prior to the tipoff, but Tiger fans had to hold on to the final buzzer to learn which team would reign over the rivalry.

Scotland County appeared destined to secure top billing, opening up big leads in the first two quarters.

Harley Stone knocked down a couple of jumpers in the opening frame to help the home team build a 10-6 advantage.

The junior forward followed a three pointer by Kasey Dial with his second field goal of the second half to put his team on top 17-9 with 3:03 left before halftime. Drew Miller connected on a three pointer to send the Tigers to the locker room with a 20-12 lead.

SCR-I maintained the cushion early in the third period as Stone and Brock Bondurant converted field goals. But Knox County responded with back-to-back three pointers to trim the lead to one.

Miller answered for SCR-I with a three pointer of his own that helped SCR-I hold on to a 31-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Knox County turned to the full court press to start the fourth period and it immediately paid dividends. The Eagles opened the fourth period with a 7-0 run to pull ahead 34-31 before Mathes scored on an offensive rebound. Miller scored on a drive to the basket before Mathes knotted the score at 37-37 with a hoop in the paint with just over three minutes left to play.

Dial gave Scotland County the lead for good when he drilled a three pointer with 2:45 on the clock to make it 40-38. Scotland County's defense shutout the Eagles down the stretch to preserve the 43-38 victory.

Stone finished with 14 points to lead Scotland County (11-10, 5-3 in the Tri Rivers Conference). Dial chipped in with nine points while Mathes and Miller each added eight points.
