Lady Tigers Win Again, Lose Again
For the second straight night at the North Shelby Tourney, SCR-I won a game but lost a player to a knee injury.
For the second straight night, Scotland County put a game into the win column but suffered a key loss on the court. The Lady Tigers avenged an early-season loss to Knox County, besting the Lady Eagles 38-26 on Thursday night to advance to the championship game of the North Shelby Tournament.
SCR-I picked up the win without starting guard Cali Holt, who went down in Tuesday night's game with a knee injury and is feared to be out for the season.
The Lady Tigers witnessed an eerily similar repeat on Thursday night, as senior Anna Duley was helped from the floor after injuring her knee in the third period.
Up to that point, the two teams had been locked in a defensive slugfest. Field goals by Ashley Tague and Jamie Shaw helped SCR-I take a 7-5 lead in the first period.
Skyler Alderton hit a three pointer and had five of her team's nine points in the second period as SCR-I led 16-13 at the break.
Despite Duley's injury in the third period, the Lady Tigers simply clamped down on the defensive end, not allowing a single field goal over the eight-minute stretch.
That allowed Scotland County to go on a 12-2 run to blow the game open. Shaw was the key on the offensive end. The senior center scored eight points during the run to put her team on top 28-15.
Scotland County put the game away at the free throw line. Alderton made five of six from the charity stripe as all 10 of Scotland County's fourth quarter points came on free throws.
Stacey Leckbee and Amber Ausmus made things interesting with a late three point barrage but it was not enough as Scotland County prevailed 38-26.
SCR-I improved to 9-3 on the year behind three players in double digits. Tague led the way with 13 points. Shaw finished with 12 points and Alderton added 10 points.
