Rusty Tigers Fall to Marion County 37-34 in First Game Back From Christmas Break

After a two-week break from game action, one would expect a little bit of rust the first time out for the Scotland County Tigers. SCR-I looked okay in the first half of Tuesday's contest versus Marion County before things ground to a near halt in the second half, allowing the Mustangs to escape Memphis with a 37-34 victory.

Marion County built an 11-9 lead in the first period despite five first quarter points from Andrew Mathes.

The Tigers turned the tables in the second period. Drew Miller connected on a three pointer and the Tigers got field goals from Dakota Wells, Harley Stone and Mathes to help take a 21-18 lead at the intermission.

Marion County opened the third period with a 6-0 run fueled by several Scotland County turnovers. Stone connected on a jumper to halt the run. Brock Bondurant scored on an offensive rebound to put the Tigers back on top 25-24. But that was the last lead of the contest for SCR-I.

Marion County put up a 5-0 run before Sabe Sears scored on a drive to the basket making the score 29-27 in favor of the Mustangs heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers went scoreless for the first four minutes of the final period thanks in large part to struggles at the free throw line. SCR-I misses six of seven from the charity stripe in the game's final eight minutes.

Still the Tigers were within a bucket after Wells connected on a jumper to make the score 32-30 with 4:44 left to play. Scotland County again pulled within one score when Stone hit from the perimeter to make it 34-32 with 2:01 left on the clock.

A bucket in the paint by Mathes with 47 seconds left again trimmed the deficit to just two points, but SCR-I was never able to get over the hump. The Tigers made a pair of defensive stops in the final seconds but were unable to convert on the offensive end allowing Marion County to hold on for the 37-34 victory.

Mathes led Scotland County (4-6) with nine points. Miller added seven points. Marion County (6-1) was led in scoring by Dustin Bock with 13 points and Kason Spratt with 11 points.
