ROBERT EARL AYER
(3/13/1941 - 12/20/2011)



Robert Earl Ayer, 70 of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri on Tuesday, December 20, 2011.

The son of Earl Earnest and Leenorah Elizabeth (Ballenger) Ayer, he was born on March 13, 1941 in Downing, Missouri. Following his graduation from Lancaster High School he was inducted into the United States Air Force in 1959. He was united in marriage to Cheryl Williams on November 9, 1963 in St. Joseph, Missouri and to this union, a son, Michael was born.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Ayer of Kirksville, Missouri; one son, Michael Ayer and wife, Recee of Kirksville, Missouri; two grandchildren, Sara Wise and husband, Brian of Kirksville, Missouri and Kristin Ayer of Kirksville, Missouri; great-grandson, Travis Wise of Kirksville, Missouri and another great grandson soon to be born, Matthew Wise; two loving dogs, Skippy and Kitty; one brother, Randall Ayer and wife, Marilyn of Lancaster, Missouri; brother-in-law, Willard Williams of Batavia, Illinois; sister-in-law, Emily Hughes and husband, Dan of St. Joseph, Missouri; nephew, Janson Ayer and wife, Heather of Maple Grove, Minnesota; nieces, Amanda Ayer of Kirksville, Missouri, Amy Cox and husband, Ricky of St. Joseph, Missouri and Ann Sessions and husband, Greg of Wetumtka, Alabama; several great-nieces and nephews; cousins and other family members.

His parents; a brother, Ritchie Ayer and a faithful companion, their dog, Wicket, preceded Robert in death.

Robert was a conductor for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for a number of years in Des Moines. Iowa, while living in Lorimor, Iowa. After retiring from the railroad, Robert and Cheryl moved to Kirksville, Missouri in 2003. Some of his favorite pastimes included watching television especially westerns and WWE, hunting and fishing, and spending time with the grandchildren, great-grandson, nieces and nephews.

Robert was an avid supporter of his son, Michael's accomplishments in his military career as he has been deployed three times. Robert was always there to lend his son a listening ear when needed.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was loved by everyone who knew him.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 23, 2011 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith of Lancaster, Missouri. Special musical selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "It Is Finished". Pallbearers were Mike McNary, Tim Melvin, Stanley Martin, Russell Melvin, Gail Melvin and Billie Jackson. Honorary pallbearer was Lavon McNary.

Memorials have been established for the Fabius Cemetery.

Burial was in the Fabius Cemetery, east of Lancaster, Missouri. Arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, Missouri.
