Dean Spurgeon, 68, of Granger died Saturday evening, December 3, 2011 at his home with his family and his beloved dog, Peaches, by his side.
He was born the son of Russell "Bill" and Anna "Annie" (Webster) Spurgeon on April 3, 1943 at St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport, IA.
Dean married the former Shirley Shannan on April 1, 1962. She survives.
He attended school at Granger. After graduation, Dean worked for the railroad and later as a maintenance supervisor for many years at Shellor Globe in Keokuk. He also farmed for many years.
Dean enjoyed woodworking, bird watching, fishing and fishing tournaments, cooking and playing cards. He coached Little League as well.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry "Danny" Rankin; brothers, Eldon "Bert" Spurgeon and Elton Spurgeon.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of the home; sons, Rob and wife Carolyn Spurgeon, Chet Spurgeon, and Destery and wife Sabrina Spurgeon, all of Granger; 10 grandchildren, Tebble Stearns, Daniel and Joe Spurgeon, Chastity Lange, Jeanie and Dustin Beames, Sayde and Corbyn Spurgeon, and Corey and Casey Spurgeon; 11 great grandchildren, Madison, Dalton and Hunter Stearns, Tristan and Trinity Beames, Dillon and Dakota Lange, Aurlynn, Drake, and Annelise Spurgeon, and Jemma Rae Beames; a brother, Walter "Wally" Spurgeon of Rockport, MO; a dog, Peaches; a lifelong friend, George Mendenhall of Crawford; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda Bain of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Shawn McAfee, pastor of the Peaksville Christian Church, officiating. Special taped music selections were played, "On the Road Again," "Waltz Across Texas," and "Goodhearted Woman." Honorary bearers were George Mendenhall, Rob, Chet, Destery, and Wally Spurgeon, Tom Shannan, Pat Powell, Bill Porter, and Devin Holt. Cremation followed the service with a private committal at a later date.
