Harold D. Arnold, 85, of Knoxville, IL, died at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Knox County Nursing Home.

He was born May 17, 1925, in Memphis, the son of Emmett and Grace Estill Arnold. He married Mary Evaun Mathes on Dec. 3, 1944, in Memphis. She preceded him in death August 21, 1980. He later married Minnie Dilts in January 1984, in Galesburg, IL. She preceded him in death May 9, 2009.

He is survived by four daughters, Deanna (and Doug) Bryant of Galesburg, IL, Linda (and Toby) Machler of Scottsdale, AZ, Connie (and Harland) Schroeder of Noblesville, IN, and Mary Arnold of Mesa, AZ; four granddaughters, Lisa, Dawn, Heather and Megan; a great-granddaughter, Jordan; four great-grandsons, Tyler, Cameron, Garrett and Nick; two brothers, Estill Arnold of Rock Island and Bill (and Dorothy) Arnold of Kewanee; and step grandchildren. Harold is also survived by family and friends in the Memphis, MO area.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard Arnold and one in infancy; and a stepsister, Marge Donahue.

Harold was a custodian for Galesburg School District 205 for 18 years, retiring in 1987. He attended Memphis, MO schools. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Harold served in the United States Army during World War II.

The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Greg Fitch officiated. Military rites were provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 on Saturday at the chapel. Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel. Burial was in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Knox County Nursing Home or a charity of the donor's choice.
